Phenolic Foam (Details and specifications for Phenolic foam)
Phenolic foam is an expanded, closed cell foam. It has excellent self extinguishing and fire retardant properties and is CFC free. Phenolic foam comes in preformed sections, these sections are formed by the supplier and are cut to the customers requirements.
Phenolic foam sections come encapsulated in foil to Mylar (vapour barrier) and are secured to the various components using a contact adhesive glue. The insulation is then covered using a mechanical barrier, determined by the customer’s operational requirements. Various other vapour barriers, such as bitumen with membrane, are also used to prevent moisture transmission.
Advantages and Characteristics of Phenolic foam
- Comes in different densities, between 35kg/m³ to 120kg/m³
- Has a 90% closed cell formation
- Complies with the Class 1 of SABS 0177 Part III standard, which is the highest SABS fire rating.
- Has a thermal conductivity of between 0.018 W/mK to 0.023 W/mK
- Has an operating range between -180°C and +120°C
- Releases very low levels of smoke under pyrolisis.
